Mellow Host 0f Texas!

Ernest  McClure ; USAF Services   Bartend Emeritus  , 50 years  twice  retired,  came twice  back for  more tip jar!

Cousin Ernie !

I remember  arriving  in Abilene with my  beautiful wife and  2 year old Tom  on Columbus Day 1975. 40 years back. Everything closed but  Dairy Queen and tried to figger out what’s a “Buster”???  Not too long we came down to pick up my ’63 Porsche   at N Orleans  and  wandered into old  wooden Lackland  O’club and  met you. Next I was  at W’Hall Med Cntr  Jan ’77  for9 months and she and Tom with you were our family room along with Iran’s Shah!!

Day  in ‘ 79  they allowed  Shah to come for treatment   they closed the base while  we  were  at the  bar with Ernie at Happy Hour.  I hustled  us out to the  ’73 Bavaria and  cut across the  golf course to hit  Kelly AFB  access rd.  Next was  2 SP cars chasing  us down and  made us go back and wait out the  all clear when he  had settled in the VIP qtrs.  Same  we had  used with I was a visitor  on Hosp. weekends.   His  son had been at Reese AFB in pilot training while I bunked in the BOQ otrs  during my  EdD  residence  time at Texas Tech in Lubbock, ’77-78. Nice kid, everyone liked him and no shit head like the ones  took our  Embassy  captive and since. I ‘d been in  Weisbaden AB Hosp. ’75 while his pilot’s child was in  for cancer treatments and all the USAF folk told us how  thoughtful he was for his staff.  The Shah had  our EB-66s down for ECM demonstration but I was not able to get to IRAN during Dorly’s first tubal pregnancy  Aug ’71.   First class treatment the guys  said. Hated to miss a  section of the globe I’ve not passed over still.  That’s Iraq border to Burma/Thailand.

Usually,  Ernie,  you go with best  opine and when  I’d  a real need   of an assist in 2001 B-57  reunion  you were it.  There’s LOT’s  of  shade tree  mechanics , I know ONE Shade tree  bartender ever.  Saved my ass and we BOTH had a wonderful time, performed a miracle including local reloading HEB Tonic Water in the heat.! She’s  still beautiful and  your other G’son Tiny Tom’s the biggest value Realtor NW Alamo City!! Can I pick em? Our love to you  both but recall “The Mellow Host of Texas”,  me ,you,  MGen Danny  James  III and Jazz Band of the West? That’s a HOOT I’ve on tape.

Black Friday Eve On

Quoth  Black Santa, “Ever  more”

Once  upon a midnight  clearier,  ma and I was sleeping  wearier
opened many a quaint and curious box of Christmas gone before.
We’d had a toddy,  now  were napping, suddenly  some  roof  top rapping,
then, more gentle,  fingers  tapping, tapping on the fire screen door.
“Can’t be Santa Claus, ” I muttered  “Just a legend, tut- tut- tuttered”, just  “Virginia, there’s a Santa!” only  that and nothing  more.
Now distinctly I remember it  was  24th December
and each family shopping  member since Black Friday adding to  our credit more.
Then out popped Santa,  all in black just why I can’t
imagine but to tell we shoppers  keep on  charging  ever more.
Profit prophet  of the season as we just take leave of reason,
crawling  out our  fire screen door.
“Santa”,  said I kinda  sleepy, “Why the somber sorta  creepy
costume quite unlike the  furry red and white before?”
“Friend”, the former  cheery  fellow   said  more  firmly unlike  jello,
“In my bag are all your charges. I’m declaring no more largesse!
No more  largesse, never more.”
Then he turned, but I intruded, “Hey, you jerk, there’s tax incuded!”
He was gone so this year’s  history  added to some Christmas mystery
but  for next year seems the  simplest?  Santa’s on our Do not call list.
Santa , don’t call  on us, never more!

Reference for the date

Busy reading up and selling AR. PT called and we spoke long. Could have called y’day but waited for the announce. They really missed their 30 day written notice! Asked him to extend it to the 15th and he refused to get busy with other offers. They Emailed the notice y’day. Is some AR biz needed to wait but is not the contract date rqt. I’d msgd them y’day PM to please tell AR holders what’s going on past the 30 day rqt. Guess we’ll see there sometime but is no longer me! Was decision on very few holes over about 1.15 sg mi ( 3 sq KM or 1 x 3. between in W #3 and E #6 and not shabby assays where .1 PPM or 1 gr is heap cut at other Sonora mine in ’11. About 1/4 our grade in NO high grade quartz veins at all. Best holes, 5,8,10,11 were closest to the Julio but obviously no veins. #8 hit section of 5.1 g = .17 oz. Plan is to deal with U ground suitor from Utah before AR contract and listen. He wondered if AR would seek to nego to a lower split but they were firm just not wishing to continue. Their decision and he feels honorable gents but just no go in the deal in undecided times. Least we now for sure Magaino is a firm hold for better times and more reason to dump them and BUY more cheap Mexus.
More on other items will wait

“The La Colorada Mineral Resource estimate is reported below at a 0.1 ppm cut-off grade.”

“Tomarra IS another day” stuff.

Old friend of mine coined the Fat Lady quote in ’78/79 Spurs/Bullets NBA E finals but Spurs lost last minute stuff by Wes Unsfeld after were 3 to 1 up.

“The correct expression is that; “the opera ain’t over till the fat lady sings.” It is said that this expression was first used by a sports writer, Dan Cook, writing for the San Antonio News-Express, Texas, round about the year 1976. Dan Cook doubled up as a sporting commentator for KENS-TV and repeated the line in an attempt to raise the fortunes of the local basketball team, the San Antonio Spurs in a series against the Washington Bullets in 1978. This was to no avail because the Spurs lost. However, the bullets’ coach, Dick Motta, took up the phrase as a caution to fans for overconfidence. From there on it came into general use.”

Dan was one of the old time Sports Reporter greats and he’d say he’d look up from hunt and pecking typing and there’d be Rocky Marciano or Sammy Baugh dropping in to chat at his Exp/News 4th floor office. Me too, he liked my humor with a few quotes in the morning Express. He had stories to waste. One night Dorly and I were at old Sandy Shores in Corpus and wound up around close at the bar. Dan ‘s wife had bought a small table from Dorly in ’81 at her “Wood N’ You” ( my inspiration for a name at Tahoe Inn one day arranging for cousin John to make them in Placerville cabinet shop) ponderosa pine custom store and I’d asked about it at the pool that day. He had a few friends ending eve and we 2’d eaten late at the Yard Arm down on Bay Shore Dr. We swapped big ones and I later realized I was again Bubba Phillips in focus in the background but among all time greats. One time I pulled my “A conque in the head” gag at a funny story contest. Played a tune on my big shell after “practicing in the John” for good
acoustics! Oh yeah, was Air Force “Off we go”.

My proof read Ch3

1st real job at Williams AFB as 2nd Lt was proof reading the ’61 Aviation Physiology syllabus. Every ATC base had one area responsible for and Willie was longest active fly trng base from WW2 . Made several changes and when I got to Waco James Conally Nav school ? I missed 2 on purpose as old syllabus I knew was incorrect . Called it who cares ? I’m right! . Retired , I met my Willie Alt Chamber instructor now head PHD at Randolph Physiology. Remembered and we had a good laugh. Aint always true as printed or believed . Good lesson! Keep well or at least better , Dave! Don

So I should be using the phrase as a caution for confidence. Thanks for tip…perhaps it was followed intuitively as the prudent side of me says half of my portfolios estimated value is more than enough to invested in any one stock. … but boy was i tempted this am.

You’ve met some interesting people in life. You ever think of writing a memoir?

End of runways and Inland Regional Center shootings

Post # of 3127
Both  March AFB and Norton AFB  have changed with   base  closure   boards  decisions. .  March switched to Reserve  Military status and Norton is now San Bernadino Intl
Pays to know  region E of main LA county is called the Inland Empire
First operational assign ’64 was March AFB B-52’s. Rented old ranch house end of W Laurel at RR cut base of Box Canyon Mtn was used as a TB sanitarium in 30’s. That’s tall mtn with all the antennas that divides Moreno Valley/ San Berdoo and Riverside. In Buffs we called it Bust yer Butt about 5 mi off end of single long run way to N. San B was the bigger city for more fun and Norton was logistics not a SAC base so a bit freer atmosphere at the O Club. Recall in mid ’60s driving up I 215 we’d take a real deep breath at F’way dips and hold it in smog so bad you’d burn eyeballs until up above worst again. Some enviro progress at least seen today. Gets bad but not true awful. Shootings  at  Dec 2  Inland Center party  were about a mile w of old Norton now Inlt AP runway. Old National Orange Show area. 8
