“How not to Start an Old Aircraft
Just to remind you about the dangers of hand-swinging a propeller.
Anyone who has been around Reciprocating Engine Aircraft will all be able to spot the error right away.
This photo is absolutely incredible! It should be a poster for what not to do.
But can you tell what’s wrong with it?”
Pic is bare assed beauty swings thru a Cessna radial.
“Yes, I imagine you spotted it, too.
Never, ever, try to prop-start an aircraft without chocking the wheels first!
I expect that caught your eye right away, as it did mine….”

Had a kid Ian Burnie in my Nav class. His wife was a really lovely Hawaiian he married enlisted at Hickham and was in OCS Lackland while I was at OTS after Basic. Met again in Waco. Ian was from pretty well off family and retired as Harbor Officer at Hilo or some place. After awhile first time around her you finally noticed she’s missing an arm and the sweater sleeve was pinned closed.. She was so lovely and charming after that you never noticed. Lost it swinging prop at flying club. One of most unusual ladies I ever met. Laughter and beauty shine despite horrible maiming. On Sunday, October 5, 2014 6:35 PM,<Idontlob wrote:
“Hi, Don. Wow, she lost her arm, huh? That’s too bad. My dad flew for American Airlines and he gave me some flying lessons in a Piper Cub when I was in high school, and I remember being a little nervous propping the engine….I was always happy when that was over! We don’t have to deal with that any more….fine with me!Paul called me earlier this week….that was a surprise. I called him 5 or 6 weeks ago and we had a nice chat….our first. He seems like a nice guy, and he was cautiously optimistic that Mexus would be a success for us….it sounds like things are in the works, and I hope they “pan out” for all of us. Stuff wasted him away after work as aircraft designer in So Cal. Bought self a sail boat and cruised the coast awhile. Cal Vets home Yountville is decent place to pass time left. Not a lot left when he died. Biggest aviation fan I knew. Summers he’d wash airplanes at Oildale AP for flight time. Never forget day he told me he’d learned a Chandelle. Sounded so cool. Seems PT called a lot to thank us last week. It’ll work just suck in the gut and tough it out. 8
I used to flight instruct when I was just starting out in aviation, and spent many an hour doing chandelles during the lessons. Time to move on to something new when the student would start doing them better than me. 🙂 Marty
Folks, really early combat tactic when limited thrust needs assist. Head on rendezvous same level, kill off speed in steep climbing turn to stall , get behind and above in slowing speed can increase then in level dive but fastest 180 possible except split S rolling dive which’d put you below and disadvantage. Usually to get away from attack not engage. Dawn patrol stuff going east gives you attack from the sun as well. Toss in Immelman half loop roll reverse and was WW1 dogfighting about it! Stiff brandy at the mess and Live to fly another day. 8
