I was always the guy back of the famous photo. Made eventful life rubbing elbows, Flying combat with my Wing Commander Chuck Yeager ( for years advising my spark plug choice at dinner time) who’s boss at Clark AB PI was Maj Gen Bennie O Davis, famed black airman. Mornings,I’d park my ’55 Speedster front of the O Club as he was back from a brisk parade ground walk. “Dugout Doug” Supremo Commander Philippine Forces once did the same in 30’s. I’d the 0nly Porsche Speedster in the Pacific shipping there from Oakland Terminal on leaving USA. The owner of P. I. Esso Gas came over and wanted to buy it for son when I filled up on way to Clark from Manila Port in August ’66; “I’ll take it when you leave for USA”.
Nope MY Porsches were MY Porsches that’s that! so bought a 68 Targa for delivery to next assignment in S Carolina . Front yard had a ’55, ’63 and ’68 pius a ’65 Falcon to get between their port arrivals. Silly Powder blue coupe has been drivng around N Californa Eureka area with a red rt front fender nephew replaced
Laugh my head off to se it again on 101
My ’63 coupe is in 3rd restoration; other 2 long gone not my fault. Got married and went into a ’73 3L BMW Bavaria;
my wife was selling Jet Jocks sport cars tax free.
I’d found it in a hay barn fire Lake Elsinore and was the car James Dean traded for ‘Lil Bastard” that killed him on way to road races in my hometown Salinas,Sept ’55. Kid named Turnipseed!! in a ’50 Ford going east back to Fresno State. Dean was blinded by setting sun heading west to Paso Robles.
All she wrote for Jimmie, mechanic lived. The racer became famed DEATH CAR rebuilt.My Speedster kept me alive cross half the world back to Germany in ’69. Anyway was a lovely now Porsche rubinrot from Dean’s white since all my Porsche’s were red. Bennie would say “Nice car, Captain.” I’d say, ” Thank you, General” and go our ways.
