The Gold Update by Mark Mead Baillie — 268th Edition — San Francisco — 03 January 2015
2) California: Only our silly little State could come up with this. The powers that be are now requiring new chicken cage standards that allow sufficient space for the hens to move about, stretch their wings, and so forth. What’s next for our poultry pals? Driver’s licenses? Don’t laugh: beginning yesterday, illegals (I’m sorry: “undocumented immigrants”) can officially apply for them,

Supremes to judge chicken dance ?
“This is not an animal-welfare issue; it is about California’s attempt to protect its economy from its own job-killing laws by extending those laws to everyone else in the country,” Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange said in a
statement. “The citizens of California made a choice for their own state, and when they realized it would harm their egg producers, they made an unconstitutional decision to spread the damage to other States. If California can get away with this, it won’t be long before the environmentalists in California tell us how we must build cars, grow crops, and raise cattle too.”
Law says none can even SELL illegal eggs in largest egg state or face 180 days in the jug!
MMB, spent summers on aunt’s egg farm in Hallwood N Marysville in the peach orchards/gold dredger rock piles. Want round rocks to line freeways? Shazam!
50K hens and stupidest creatures going. Free floor space requires little metal specks pressed on beak to stop pecking each other.to death. Cleaning eggs is a chore with droppings all around nest areas. Cages eliminate both troubles and only feature question
is size. 1 sq ft is CA law. Aunt Leona got smart in 50’s and went to brood houses instead and sold chicks. Easiest health gauge possible is stress hormones in the laid eggs and studies show cage beats free range with attacks by others. When we moved to Prunedale in ’51 we raised 300 chicks ( hens selected as roosters are rejects/killed. and was my role to feed and care in a large 20X20 hen house with peck yard.. Gather eggs buff and pack in crate for Poultry Producers Central CA. Sunday after church a wire leg hook picked non producer for dinner. Wring pluck and clean. Great free range bird but used slave labor in non- profit enterprise included milking a Gurnsey, raising calf and slopping pig before school. Best aspect? Get an education and never more! Don
