First operational assign ’64 was March AFB B-52’s. Rented old ranch house end of W Laurel at RR cut base of Box Canyon Mtn was used as a TB sanitarium in 30’s. That’s tall mtn with all the antennas that divides Moreno Valley/ San Berdoo and Riverside. In Buffs we called it Bust yer Butt about 5 mi off end of single long run way to N. San B was the bigger city for more fun and Norton was logistics not a SAC base so a bit freer atmosphere at the O Club. Recall in mid ’60s driving up I 215 we’d take a real deep breath at F’way dips and hold it in smog so bad you’d burn eyeballs until up above worst again. Some enviro progress at least seen today.
