Okies & Ole Kentuck

I grew up looking daily at what was once Kern River valley swamp. But the pump jacks were surrounded by aging wooden derricks in the early 40’s.
“I LOVE the smell of lung burning asphalt tar in the morning”. Baker did NOT discover an oil field, Standard Oil did. He just dug 3 canals irrigating desert agriculture. One we lived on in OIldale, ‘Okieland’ E of US 99 & Kern River to make discovery possible in 1900’s . May have been a good lesson age 5 off to WW2 adults building military bases and ships in San Francisco as a REAL civic education gone to handbasket Hell! Homeless haven! Watch where ya step! 8
